The conversation
In the see.africa Hotel Manager Interview Series, we speak directly with the people behind distinctive places to stay. Here, Charl Theron shares what sets @Franschhoek Hotel apart, how it reflects the Cape Winelands and the local places he recommends to guests.
“What was meant to be a brief stopover turned into a four-night stay. It wasn’t just the beauty of Franschhoek—it was the genuine warmth and personalised service our team provided.”
Charl Theron, General Manager
A hotel with a distinctive sense of place
What makes this hotel—and its surrounding destination—different from anywhere else in Africa?
Charl Theron
What sets @Franschhoek Hotel apart is our distinctive sense of place. Situated in the heart of the valley and built on the historic Hey Joe Brewery site, we blend modern comfort with local character, creating an experience that is both sophisticated and authentically Franschhoek.
Guests can enjoy curated wine and culinary experiences, explore the surrounding vineyards and village, and return to a hotel that feels relaxed, welcoming and deeply connected to its surroundings.
What local traditions, ingredients, art or experiences do you incorporate into the guest experience?
Charl Theron
Food and wine naturally play a central role in that experience. We celebrate the region’s world-renowned culinary heritage by showcasing locally sourced produce, seasonal ingredients and partnerships with nearby wine estates.
Guests are encouraged to explore the valley’s exceptional food and wine scene, from cellar tastings and vineyard tours to artisanal markets and farm-to-table dining experiences.
The people behind the experience
Can you share a memorable story that captures the spirit of the hotel?
Charl Theron
What was meant to be a brief stopover turned into a four-night stay. The guest later shared that it wasn’t just the beauty of Franschhoek that encouraged them to extend their visit—it was the genuine warmth and personalised service they received from our team. From the front desk and housekeeping staff to our restaurant team, every interaction made them feel welcomed and valued.
What makes this story particularly meaningful is that it reflects the culture we strive to create every day. Hospitality is not only about providing accommodation; it is about creating connections, anticipating needs and making people feel at home.
Our employees take immense pride in sharing the best of Franschhoek with our guests, and that passion often transforms a stay into a memorable experience.
What is the first thing you want guests to feel when they walk through the door?
Charl Theron
The very first feeling I want our guests to experience is a sense of welcome—a genuine feeling that they have arrived somewhere special and that they belong here.
Hospitality is ultimately about people, and first impressions matter. From the warm greeting at reception to the atmosphere of the hotel and the attentiveness of our team, every detail should make guests feel comfortable, valued and at ease from the moment they arrive.
I also want guests to immediately connect with the unique character of Franschhoek. Whether it is the beautiful surroundings, the relaxed pace of the Winelands or the inviting ambience of the hotel, there should be an instant sense of escape from the everyday.
Most importantly, I want guests to feel that they are not simply checking into a hotel, but beginning an experience—one where they can relax, explore, create memories and enjoy the very best that Franschhoek has to offer.
If a guest walks through our doors and feels welcomed, inspired and excited about the stay ahead, then we have achieved exactly what we set out to do.
A favourite room and a front-row view
Which is your favourite room in the hotel, and what makes it special to you?
Charl Theron
While every room at @Franschhoek Hotel has its own unique charm, my favourite would have to be one of our rooms with uninterrupted views of the Franschhoek mountains and valley.
There is something incredibly special about watching the valley come to life in the early morning light or seeing the mountains change colour as the sun sets. Those moments remind me why Franschhoek is regarded as one of South Africa’s most beautiful destinations.
I often say that while we can provide exceptional service and beautiful facilities, it is the setting of Franschhoek itself that truly leaves a lasting impression. That room captures the essence of the valley and offers guests a front-row seat to one of the most spectacular landscapes in the country.
For me, it perfectly reflects what @Franschhoek Hotel is all about: offering guests a place to slow down, reconnect, and experience the natural beauty, warmth and tranquillity that make this valley so extraordinary.
Standards, authenticity and attention to detail
How do you maintain consistently high standards across every part of the guest experience?
Charl Theron
At @Franschhoek Hotel, we focus heavily on training, communication and attention to detail. We ensure that our teams are empowered with the skills, knowledge and confidence to anticipate guest needs and resolve issues quickly and professionally. Regular quality reviews, guest feedback analysis and operational audits help us identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
Equally important is leading by example. As a management team, we remain actively involved in the day-to-day operation, engaging with both guests and staff to ensure our standards are consistently upheld. We believe that visibility, accountability and teamwork are essential to delivering excellence.
Ultimately, maintaining high standards is not about a single process or department—it is about creating a shared commitment to excellence. When every employee takes pride in their role and understands the impact they have on a guest’s stay, exceptional experiences become the norm rather than the exception.
How do you balance international hospitality standards with an experience that feels genuinely local?
Charl Theron
The key is recognising that guests expect both consistency and authenticity. International hospitality standards provide the foundation—ensuring excellence in service, comfort, cleanliness, safety and professionalism—while the local experience creates a memorable and meaningful connection to the destination.
At @Franschhoek Hotel, we focus on delivering world-class hospitality while ensuring that every aspect of the guest journey reflects the character of Franschhoek and the Cape Winelands. From the food and wine we showcase to the local experiences we recommend, we strive to immerse guests in the culture, heritage and natural beauty of the region.
Our team also plays an important role in bringing that local authenticity to life. Many of our employees have a deep connection to the area and are passionate ambassadors for the destination, sharing personal recommendations and insights that guests would not find in a guidebook.
We believe the most successful hospitality experiences are those that feel effortless. Guests should enjoy the comfort and service levels they would expect from a leading international hotel while simultaneously feeling connected to the people, stories, flavours and traditions that make Franschhoek unique.
That balance between global standards and local character is what transforms a stay from simply being comfortable to being truly memorable.
Building the next generation of hospitality leaders
What do you do to help employees grow into future leaders?
Charl Theron
Developing future leaders is one of the most important responsibilities of any General Manager. I firmly believe that great hospitality starts with great people, and investing in their growth is essential to the long-term success of both the individual and the organisation.
At @Franschhoek Hotel, we focus on creating opportunities for employees to learn, take ownership and expand their skills beyond their immediate roles. This includes ongoing training, mentoring, cross-departmental exposure and encouraging team members to take on new challenges that help build confidence and leadership capability.
We also believe in recognising potential early and providing employees with the support and guidance needed to progress within the business. Many of the strongest leaders in hospitality began their careers in entry-level positions, and we are passionate about creating clear pathways for career development and advancement.
Equally important is fostering a culture where people feel empowered to share ideas, make decisions and contribute to the success of the hotel. Leadership is not defined by a title; it is demonstrated through initiative, accountability and the ability to inspire others.
For me, one of the most rewarding aspects of my role is seeing team members grow professionally and personally. When employees develop into confident leaders who go on to mentor and inspire others, it creates a positive cycle that strengthens the entire organisation and enhances the guest experience.
What inspired you to build a career in hospitality?
Charl Theron
For me, hospitality has always been about people. There is something incredibly rewarding about creating an environment where someone feels welcomed, cared for and genuinely valued.
I was drawn to the industry because no two days are ever the same. Hospitality brings together people from different backgrounds, cultures and walks of life, and every interaction is an opportunity to make someone’s day a little better. Whether it is celebrating a special occasion, helping someone discover a new destination or simply making a guest feel at home, those moments are incredibly fulfilling.
I have also always been inspired by the people behind the industry. Hospitality is a team effort, and I have had the privilege of working alongside passionate individuals who continually challenge, support and inspire me. Watching people develop their confidence, grow their careers and discover their own potential is one of the most rewarding aspects of what I do.
Over the years, my career has evolved from simply delivering a service to understanding the responsibility we have as hoteliers to create meaningful experiences—for our guests, our employees and the communities in which we operate.
