Privacy Policy

Effective date: 12 August 2026

See.Africa (“we”, “us”) operates the See.Africa travel website and an offline-first safari companion app for African national parks. This policy explains what data we collect, why, and your choices. Where a section refers specifically to “the app” or “the website”, it applies only to that service. Questions: aisparescom@gmail.com.

What we collect

  • Account information — the email address you sign up with, used to create and secure your account and to sign you in.
  • Wildlife sightings you create — for each sighting: the animal (species), the GPS location, the date and time, and an optional photo you take or choose.
  • Your device location — while you are using the app, to record where you spot wildlife and to show your position on the park map. We use location only while the app is open; we do not track your location in the background.
  • Photos you add — only the photos you choose to attach to a sighting.

We do not collect your contacts, browsing history, or advertising IDs, and the app contains no third-party advertising or analytics trackers.

How your data is used and shared

  • Sightings you save are stored on your device first, so the app works offline.
  • When you are online, your sightings are uploaded to our cloud so you don’t lose them and so they can appear on the community sightings map.
  • Please note: sightings shown on the community map (the animal, its location, the photo, and how long ago it was seen) are visible to other See.Africa users. Do not add a photo or note you would not want other users to see.
  • We do not sell your personal data.

Service providers

  • Supabase — hosts our database, secure sign-in, and photo storage.
  • OpenStreetMap / OpenFreeMap — provide map tiles. Browsing the map does not send your personal data to them.
  • Google Play — distributes the app.

Website analytics, cookies and affiliate links

The See.Africa website uses essential technologies to operate securely and may, where consent is required, use analytics technologies to understand traffic and improve content. These services may process technical data such as your IP address, browser and device type, pages viewed, referral source, and the date and time of a visit. You can manage non-essential cookie choices through the cookie banner on the website.

Some website links are paid affiliate links to Expedia or Hotels.com. If you click one, the link includes referral identifiers so Expedia Group can attribute a qualifying booking to See.Africa, prevent fraud, measure performance and calculate commission. Expedia Group or its service providers may use cookies or similar technologies and may process click, device, referral and booking-conversion information for those purposes. See.Africa does not receive your payment-card details from these bookings.

Expedia and Hotels.com are external booking services and handle searches, accounts, payments, reservations, changes, cancellations and refunds under their own terms and privacy practices. Read the Expedia Privacy Statement and the Hotels.com Privacy Statement. Once you open an external service, its own cookie controls and privacy choices apply.

See.Africa may earn a commission from qualifying bookings made through these links, at no extra cost to you. Affiliate commission does not determine the editorial order of the hotel picks on our Deals page.

Data retention and deletion

We keep your account data until you delete it. You can delete your account at any time:

  • In the app: open the menu (top-right) → SettingsDelete account.
  • By email: if you can no longer access the app, write to aisparescom@gmail.com from your account email address.

When you delete your account, we permanently remove your account and email address. Your wildlife sightings remain on the community map so it stays useful for other explorers, but they are anonymized — no longer linked to you or your account. If you would also like your individual sightings and their photos removed, email us and we will remove them. Account deletion cannot be undone.

Children

See.Africa is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.

Security

We use industry-standard measures (encrypted connections and access controls) to protect your data. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy; we will change the effective date above and, for significant changes, notify you in the app.
