The conversation
At Dolphin Beach, on Namibia’s remarkable Atlantic shoreline between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, sea and desert create a striking contrast. For Schalk van Wyk, Group General Manager at Bay View Resort Hotel, however, the heart of hospitality is more personal: recognising a returning guest, offering a genuine welcome and giving teams the tools to make every stay memorable. In this conversation, he shares his favourite coastal moments and the leadership principles behind Bay View’s guest experience.
“Luxury does not always have to mean formality. Sometimes it is simply being recognized, remembered, and genuinely welcomed back.”
Schalk van Wyk, Group General Manager
The Atlantic meets the Namib Desert
What makes this hotel—and its surrounding destination—different from anywhere else in Africa?
Schalk van Wyk
Bay View is located at Dolphin Beach, on one of the most extraordinary stretches of Namibia’s coastline. What makes our location so special is the contrast: on one side you have the Atlantic Ocean, and on the other, the vast Namib Desert.
What local traditions, ingredients, art, or experiences do you incorporate into the guest experience?
Schalk van Wyk
We want guests to experience Namibia rather than simply stay in a hotel that happens to be in Namibia.
Our location naturally connects guests to the coast, the desert, and the adventure experiences for which the area is known. Through our food and beverage offering, we also celebrate the freshness and simplicity associated with coastal living, while our team brings something even more important: genuine Namibian warmth and hospitality.
For us, the local experience is not about creating something artificial for visitors. It is about introducing them to the landscape, flavors, people and relaxed way of life that make our coast special.
Being remembered, being welcomed
Can you share a memorable story about a guest, employee, or community member that captures the spirit of this hotel?
Schalk van Wyk
For me, it is less about one dramatic story and more about something I see repeatedly: team members remembering returning guests, remembering what they drink, where they like to sit, or simply taking the time to have a conversation with them.
Those small moments capture Bay View perfectly. Luxury does not always have to mean formality. Sometimes it is simply being recognized, remembered, and genuinely welcomed back.
That is the type of hospitality we want our guests to remember.
What is the first thing you want guests to feel when they walk through the door?
Schalk van Wyk
That they can exhale.
Travel can be busy, particularly when guests are exploring Namibia and covering long distances. When they arrive at Bay View, I want there to be an immediate change of pace.
They should feel welcomed, comfortable and looked after—but never overwhelmed. Good hospitality should feel effortless from the guest’s perspective.
A front-row seat to the Atlantic
Which is your favorite room in the hotel, and what makes it special to you?
Schalk van Wyk
All our suites have perfect sea views, therefore I would say all our suites. There is something very special about opening the curtains in the morning and having the Atlantic Ocean immediately in front of you.
The ocean here is constantly changing. Some mornings are beautifully clear, while others have that characteristic coastal mist rolling in from the Atlantic. Both have their own atmosphere.
For me, that view captures exactly what Bay View is about: where calm meets the coast.
Standards delivered by people
How do you maintain consistently high standards across every part of the guest experience?
Schalk van Wyk
Consistency comes from systems, training, and accountability.
We establish clear operating standards for each department, but having standards written down is only the beginning. Management needs to be present in the operation, teams need regular training and feedback, and we need to inspect what we expect.
We also listen carefully to our guests. Complaints and feedback are not simply problems to resolve; they tell us where our systems can improve.
Ultimately, consistency comes from creating a culture where every department understands that they contribute to the same guest journey.
Leadership on the hotel floor
What inspired you to build a career in hospitality?
Schalk van Wyk
What I love about hospitality is that no two days are exactly the same. It combines people, operations, leadership, creativity and business in one industry.
But what has kept me passionate about it is the opportunity to create experiences.
A hotel room is ultimately just a physical space. What guests remember is how they felt while they were there, how they were treated, and the experiences they had. Being able to influence that—and to develop teams who understand the importance of it—is what continues to inspire me.
What is the most important leadership lesson that working in hospitality has taught you?
Schalk van Wyk
That standards and people have to go together.
You can have beautiful facilities, excellent systems, and very high expectations, but hospitality is ultimately delivered by people. As a leader, you therefore have to be clear about what you expect while also giving your team the training, tools, and support to achieve it.
I have also learned that leadership in hospitality requires visibility. You cannot manage the entire guest experience from an office. You have to understand what is happening on the floor, listen to your team, and remain connected to what the guest is actually experiencing.
For me, the goal is simple: set the standard, live the standard, and give your team the confidence to deliver it.
