10 Best Beaches in Africa

If we had to choose only ten beaches across the entire continent and its Indian Ocean and Atlantic islands, these are the ones we would send a traveler to first. The ranking is not based on one magazine list. We compared large traveler-review datasets, Google review signals, recurring comments about the beach in nearby hotel and destination reviews, scenery, swimming and snorkeling, and whether the place is genuinely worth building a beach holiday around.

That matters because the most photographed beach is not always the best beach to spend five days on — and the beach with the highest raw review score may have only a few dozen reviews. Below, we show the evidence and the recurring traveler-review pattern for every pick.

Quick answer: what is the best beach in Africa?

Anse Lazio on Praslin, Seychelles, is our #1 overall beach in Africa for 2026. It combines the classic Seychelles granite-and-white-sand scenery with unusually strong review depth: roughly 4.8/5 from more than 3,000 Google reviewers in the listing we checked, while Tripadvisor’s 2026 Africa beach ranking places it #3 with about 4.7/5 from more than 4,300 reviews. Unlike some ultra-photogenic beaches, it is also genuinely good for swimming and snorkeling.

Best overallAnse Lazio, Seychelles — scenery + swimming + review strength.
Most extraordinaryNosy Iranja, Madagascar — two islands joined by a white sandbar.
Best mainland-resort beachDiani, Kenya — long white sand, warm water and excellent hotel depth.

How the See.Africa Score works

The See.Africa Score is a 0–10 composite designed to balance crowd wisdom with our own editorial judgment. We convert Google and Tripadvisor ratings from 5 stars to a 10-point scale, then blend them with our own assessment of the beach experience.

30% Google30% Tripadvisor40% See.Africa editorial

See.Africa editorial looks at scenery, swimming, snorkeling, access, crowding, distinctiveness, tides and whether the beach is genuinely worth building a holiday around. If one platform has too little reliable data, we reweight the remaining components proportionally rather than inventing a number.

1Anse LazioPraslin, SeychellesBest overallSee.Africa
Score
9.7
Google 9.6Tripadvisor 9.4

Anse Lazio is the beach that best survives the gap between postcard expectations and the reality of spending a day there. The sand is pale and soft, huge granite boulders frame both ends of the bay, there is natural shade, and the water is clear enough for snorkeling while still being a proper swimming beach.

Its review strength is unusually convincing for a remote island beach. The Google listing we checked was around 4.8/5 from more than 3,000 reviews. Tripadvisor’s 2026 Best of the Best Beaches in Africa places Anse Lazio at #3, with roughly 4.7/5 from more than 4,300 reviews. Reviewers repeatedly mention the white sand, clear water, snorkeling and the fact that it still feels spectacular even by Seychelles standards.

Why the reviews matterThis is not a 4.9 score built from 80 people. Thousands of travelers have reviewed it across major platforms, and the same strengths recur: sand, water clarity, shade and snorkeling.
Hotel-review connectionNearby Praslin luxury stays frequently sell the island around access to beaches such as Anse Lazio and Anse Georgette — the beach itself is a destination asset, not a side attraction.

Traveler review note: it can become busy by Seychelles standards, and sea conditions vary. Go early or later in the afternoon for the best experience.

Google 9.8Tripadvisor 10.0

Nosy Iranja is less famous internationally than the Seychelles, which is exactly why it belongs this high. Two small islands are connected at low tide by a bright sandbar cutting through turquoise water. From above it looks almost unreal; on the ground it feels more remote and less engineered than many famous resort beaches.

The review base is smaller, but unusually positive: the listings we checked show roughly 4.9/5 from more than 300 Google reviews and around 5.0/5 from 350+ Tripadvisor reviews. Travelers repeatedly describe the sandbar, clear water, turtles and the sense of being somewhere genuinely special.

Why it ranks above more famous beachesDistinctiveness. There are many beautiful white-sand beaches in Africa; there are very few where the geography itself is this memorable.
Hotel-review connectionAccommodation is far more limited than in Mauritius or Zanzibar. That keeps the setting special, but it also means choosing the right lodge will matter enormously in our hotel follow-up.

Traveler review note: harder access, fewer polished hotel choices and less review volume than the big resort beaches.

Le Morne has something most tropical beaches do not: a 556-metre basalt mountain rising immediately behind the lagoon. That changes the whole visual experience. You still get pale sand, turquoise water and palms, but the background makes the beach unmistakably Mauritian rather than generically tropical.

The public-beach Google review signal is strong at about 4.6/5 from roughly 2,400+ reviews. Tripadvisor’s 2026 Africa beach list also places Le Morne in its Top 10, around 4.6/5. Reviewers repeatedly mention the mountain views, clear water, snorkeling and water sports.

Why it works for a full holidayLe Morne combines a genuinely beautiful public beach with some of Mauritius’ strongest luxury resorts, so the beach experience does not end when you leave the sand.
What hotel guests mentionThe mountain-and-lagoon view is a recurring reason travelers choose resorts here. It is one of those rare cases where the hotel setting and the public beach reinforce each other.

Traveler review note: some sections have coral fragments or stones in the shallows, and windier conditions are part of what makes Le Morne so good for kitesurfing.

Score

Google 9.4Tripadvisor 9.0

Diani proves you do not need to fly to an island for a world-class African beach. South of Mombasa, the coastline runs for kilometres with very pale sand, palms and warm Indian Ocean water. At low tide, reef and sand features appear; at higher tide, large sections become excellent for swimming.

The review base is robust: approximately 4.7/5 from 2,000+ Google reviewers and around 4.5/5 from roughly 2,000 Tripadvisor reviews. Tripadvisor’s 2026 Africa ranking places Diani at #5. Positive reviews consistently mention the clean white sand, turquoise water, long walks and relaxed feel.

Why Diani is #4It combines beach quality with practical travel value better than almost anywhere else: lots of accommodation, restaurants, activities and easy safari combinations.
What hotel guests mentionAcross Diani resort reviews, the beach itself is repeatedly one of the strongest positives — often more memorable than rooms or facilities.

Traveler review note: seaweed varies seasonally and persistent beach vendors are a recurring negative in traveler reviews.

If this ranking were based on photography alone, Anse Source d’Argent could be #1. The giant sculpted granite boulders, shallow luminous water, palms and small coves create one of the most recognizable beach landscapes on earth.

Review evidence is substantial: around 4.6/5 from more than 2,000 Google reviewers in the listing we checked and approximately 4.5/5 from nearly 4,000 Tripadvisor reviews. Tripadvisor ranks it among Africa’s 2026 Best of the Best beaches. The praise is overwhelmingly about scenery and uniqueness.

Why it is not #1The same reviews that call it extraordinary also mention shallow water, coral, rocks and crowds. It is arguably Africa’s best beach to look at, but not necessarily its best pure swimming beach.
Hotel-review connectionLa Digue hotels benefit from access to an island full of outstanding beaches rather than one dominant resort strip — useful when we choose stays later.

Traveler review note: go for the scenery first. Tide timing materially changes the experience, and L’Union Estate charges an entrance fee for the standard access route.

Nungwi earns its place because it solves one of Zanzibar’s main beach-holiday frustrations: extreme tidal retreat. Tides still matter, but swimming access is generally more consistent than on many east-coast beaches. Add warm water, white sand, sunset-facing orientation, dhow boats and a dense choice of restaurants and hotels, and it becomes an easy place to build a holiday around.

The Google review signal is about 4.4/5 from 1,300+ reviews, while Tripadvisor is also around 4.4/5 from more than 2,800 reviews. Tripadvisor’s 2026 Africa list places it in the Top 10. Reviewers consistently praise the water, sunsets and swimming; complaints focus more on crowding and persistent selling than on the beach itself.

Why it beats quieter Zanzibar beachesNungwi is not the emptiest or most pristine, but it is one of the easiest Zanzibar beaches to enjoy at different tide states and has the strongest supporting tourism infrastructure.
What hotel guests mentionBeachfront access and sunset views are major differentiators between Nungwi hotels; in the next step, hotel position on the beach will matter a lot.

Traveler review note: busy, commercial and frequently mentioned for vendor pressure. Travelers seeking silence may prefer a quieter Zanzibar coast.

7Benguerra Island beachesBazaruto Archipelago, MozambiqueBest luxury seclusionSee.Africa
Score
9.1

Benguerra is the opposite of a high-volume review destination. The reason to include it is the physical environment: enormous pale beaches, sand dunes, clear channels and the protected marine world of the Bazaruto Archipelago. Offshore reefs support exceptional snorkeling and diving, while the wider marine park is known for dolphins, turtles, rays, whale sharks and one of the western Indian Ocean’s important dugong populations.

The island itself has only a small Google review footprint — far below Diani or Camps Bay — but specialist travel reviews and luxury-lodge descriptions are remarkably consistent about the same things: space, clear water, reefs, dunes and castaway isolation. That is a useful reminder that raw review count should not be the only measure of a great beach.

Why it still makes the Top 10Very few places combine an exceptional beach with this level of marine biodiversity and genuine remoteness.
Hotel-review connectionThis is one of the strongest locations for the next hotel step: Benguerra’s best lodges are inseparable from the beach experience, rather than simply being hotels near a beach.

Traveler review note: expensive access and a much smaller accommodation market. This is a special-trip beach, not the easiest value choice.

8Santa Maria BeachSal, Cabo VerdeBest Atlantic island beachSee.Africa
Score
9.0
Google 9.6Tripadvisor 9.0

Santa Maria brings a completely different landscape into the list. Sal is dry and almost desert-like, so the bright sand and blue Atlantic feel cleaner and more graphic than the lush Indian Ocean beaches. The beach is long enough to have lively resort sections and much quieter stretches within the same walk.

The review evidence is excellent: roughly 4.8/5 from 370+ Google reviews in the beach listing we checked and approximately 4.5/5 from more than 4,000 Tripadvisor reviews. Reviewers repeatedly praise the soft sand, clear water, long walks and wind/water-sport conditions.

Why it stands outIt is one of the most convincing alternatives for travelers who want African beach weather without the humidity and tropical-greenery feel of the western Indian Ocean.
What hotel guests mentionFor Sal resorts, the quality and position of the beach is a major part of the product. The next hotel ranking should distinguish central Santa Maria from quieter sections farther along the sand.

Traveler review note: wind and Atlantic swell can make conditions feel less lagoon-like than Mauritius or Seychelles.

L’Hermitage is not the wildest beach on this list, but it may be one of the easiest to enjoy. A coral reef shelters a long shallow lagoon, giving families and casual snorkelers calm water and immediate access to fish. Filao trees provide natural shade, which is surprisingly valuable on a full beach day.

The Google signal is strong at about 4.6/5 from more than 3,300 reviews; Tripadvisor is around 4.4/5 from 500+ reviews. Reviews repeatedly mention the calm lagoon, clear water, snorkeling and shade. Tripadvisor also includes it among Africa’s Best of the Best beaches for 2026.

Why it makes the listNot every “best beach” needs giant drama. L’Hermitage is unusually usable: warm lagoon, reef, shade and enough space to stay all day.
Hotel-review connectionWest-coast Réunion hotels repeatedly benefit from proximity to the lagoon, especially for travelers who want a beach base plus volcano hikes and island exploration.

Traveler review note: parts of the lagoon are very shallow and coral fragments make water shoes useful.

One last curveballWarm water is not everything. Sometimes the view is so good that the cold Atlantic earns a place anyway.

Camps Bay is here because almost no other African beach combines a major city, white sand, sunset over the Atlantic and a wall of mountains rising immediately behind the beachfront. The Twelve Apostles and Table Mountain turn a normal city beach day into one of Cape Town’s signature landscapes.

Google Maps has multiple/duplicate beach listings, but the large ones sit around 4.6–4.7/5 with thousands of reviews; Tripadvisor is about 4.5/5 from roughly 2,800+ reviews. Travelers praise the white sand, mountain views, promenade and sunsets with remarkable consistency.

Why it is only #10For scenery and atmosphere, it could rank much higher. For swimming, the Atlantic water is genuinely cold, which makes it less universally enjoyable than the tropical beaches above.
What hotel guests mentionOcean-view rooms, sunset access and walking distance to the promenade are major value drivers for Camps Bay hotels — a strong fit for our next hotel-selection step.

Traveler review note: cold water, summer crowds and a much more urban atmosphere than the island beaches.

How we chose the 10 best beaches in Africa

There is no objective scientific answer to “the best beach,” so we deliberately avoid pretending this is a simple rating sort. A beach with 4.9 stars from 80 reviews is not automatically better than one with 4.7 from 3,000. Our ranking balances five signals:

ScenerySand, water colour, landscape, natural backdrop and overall visual distinctiveness.
Review strengthAverage rating plus review volume across major traveler platforms, not star score alone.
Beach experienceSwimming, snorkeling, shade, tides, reef conditions, space and how enjoyable a full day actually is.
DistinctivenessWhether the beach gives you something difficult to reproduce elsewhere in Africa.
StayabilityWhether there are realistic hotels and enough surrounding infrastructure to make it a holiday, not only a day trip.

Review figures are a snapshot checked in August 2026 and will change over time. We cross-checked Tripadvisor’s 2026 Best of the Best Beaches in Africa with Google review signals surfaced for the individual beaches and with recurring themes in destination/lodge reviews. Numbers are rounded because platforms continuously gain new reviews.

Why Tripadvisor’s #1 beach is not our #1

Tripadvisor’s 2026 Africa list places Boulders Beach Penguin Colony at #1, followed by Nakupenda Beach Nature Reserve and Anse Lazio. Boulders is an extraordinary place to see African penguins, but we consider it more of a wildlife-and-beach attraction than Africa’s best beach holiday. Nakupenda is a beautiful Zanzibar sandbank, but it is primarily a day-trip location rather than a place where you stay on the beach. Our list therefore gives more weight to the actual multi-day beach experience.

Map: the 10 best beaches in Africa

There is a clear pattern: the western Indian Ocean dominates the pure tropical-beach ranking, while Cabo Verde and Cape Town bring very different Atlantic experiences.

Questions travelers ask

Which African country has the best beaches?

If pure beach beauty is the priority, Seychelles is the strongest answer: it puts two beaches in our Top 5 and several more could reasonably make a Top 20. Mauritius is the stronger all-round resort destination, while Kenya and Zanzibar are easier to combine with a safari.

What is the best beach in mainland Africa?

Diani Beach in Kenya is our best mainland tropical beach. Camps Bay in South Africa is the strongest city-beach experience, while Mozambique’s Bazaruto region offers some of the most remote beach scenery connected to the African mainland.

Which beach is best for swimming?

Anse Lazio is the best all-round balance. Diani and Nungwi are also strong warm-water choices, while L’Hermitage is especially easy for calm lagoon snorkeling. Camps Bay is beautiful but much colder.

Which beach is best for a honeymoon?

Nosy Iranja, Le Morne and Benguerra are particularly strong for couples because the beach setting can be paired with secluded or high-end accommodation. We will compare specific hotels for all ten beaches in the next step.

Which beach is best after a safari?

Diani is the easiest Kenya coast option, while Nungwi pairs naturally with Tanzania safaris. Benguerra can work beautifully after a southern African safari if budget allows.
