Quick Answers

Is Mahale worth the effort?Yesโ€”if chimp trekking, remote wilderness and Lake Tanganyika matter more than ticking off savannah big game.
Best time?Juneโ€“October is the easiest first choice for trekking and beach time; the green season is lush and quieter.
Current entry fee?TANAPA currently lists US$70 international adult, US$20 child and TZS 20,000 East African resident.
How do you get there?Fly to Mahale Airstrip or Kigoma, then use a boat transfer along Lake Tanganyika.
Can you trek alone? No. Chimp visits are ranger/guide controlled and health rules apply.
Minimum chimp-trek age?TANAPA’s published chimp rules say children under 12 may not visit the chimpanzees.
How close to chimps?Follow the ranger’s current distance instruction; TANAPA’s published rules specify at least 10 m.
Mahale or Gombe?Mahale for a longer, more remote beach-and-mountain stay; Gombe for a smaller park closer to Kigoma and stronger Jane Goodall research-history context.
Freshness fact: TANAPA currently presents Mahale as a year-round chimpanzee, mountain and Lake Tanganyika park, with morning treks and air/boat access.

Season planner

What is the best time to visit Mahale?

June to October is the easiest recommendation for a first trip. Drier trail conditions make chimp trekking more comfortable and lake time simpler. Novemberโ€“February is greener and quieter. Marchโ€“May is wetter: forest is spectacular, but steep trails can be slippery and lake weather less predictable.

How do you get to Mahale?

Most visitors fly to Mahale Airstrip and continue by boat to their lodge or camp. TANAPA also lists Kigoma as a gateway, followed by a Lake Tanganyika boat transfer. Limited dry-season road access exists in the wider area, but Mahale is not a normal self-drive park.

Mahale Airstrip

Best for fly-in trips. Coordinate the boat transfer with your lodge before departure.

Via Kigoma

Useful if combining Mahale with Gombe or western-Tanzania travel. Boat times depend on vessel and lake conditions.

Once inside

Movement is primarily on foot and by boat; there is no conventional visitor road network through the core park.

Practical chimp day

How should you plan a chimpanzee-trekking day?

Morning briefing

TANAPA says treks typically depart in the morning. Follow the day’s ranger instructions and health screening.

Forest approach

Wear closed, grippy shoes, carry water and rain protection, and expect steep, humid terrain.

Chimp encounter

Stay quiet, obey distance and group-size rules, do not eat near chimpanzees and never imitate calls.

After the trek

Use the beach or lake for recovery rather than overloading the day with another strenuous hike.

Lake safety

Use lifejackets and follow skipper guidance. Winds and waves can build quickly on Tanganyika.

Offline prep

Save transfer contacts, lodge radio/phone details and flight information before reaching the remote lakeshore.
