10 Best Family Hotels in Zanzibar (2026)
Where will the kids actually have fun? Where can you swim when the tide goes out? And what does a room really cost once you add two children? Here are ten Zanzibar hotels worth comparing—with the good bits and the catches.

Before you fall in love with a hotel photo… pick the coast
North / north-west (Nungwi and Kendwa): Usually the easiest bet if your children want to get into the sea throughout more of the day. Kendwa tends to feel spacious; Nungwi has more going on. Neither is completely free of waves, rocks or currents, so always check the exact section.
East / north-east (Kiwengwa and Pwani Mchangani): Gorgeous wide beaches and often a good resort deal, but the water retreats a long way at low tide. Brilliant if the kids enjoy spotting crabs on the sand flats; frustrating if they expect a swim at 3pm.
West / south-west: Great for a quieter resort or a trip involving Stone Town; not every hotel has easy walk-in sandy swimming. A beautiful cliff-top pool is not the same as a toddler-friendly sea beach.
Our 10 family-friendly Zanzibar hotel picks
Hotel Riu Jambo
Nungwi / Kendwa side · north coast
If you’d rather not negotiate three restaurant menus every day, start here. This is the straightforward, lively, all-inclusive choice: lots of food options, pools and RIU’s children’s entertainment. The nearby north-coast water is generally less affected by low tide than Zanzibar’s eastern lagoons.
What we’d check before booking: It is a busy resort, not a private hideaway. Ask exactly what the family room sleeps, whether your children can join RiuLand at their ages, and whether your room is near the evening entertainment.
Good for: First Zanzibar holiday; primary-school children; predictable meal spending
Indicative room rate: US$190–350/night (2-adult base-room guide, not a family quote)
Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort
Nungwi · north-west
For children who will spend half their holiday in a pool and the other half on the beach, this is a sensible shortlist. It has a bigger-resort feel and the north-coast setting means fewer ‘where has the sea gone?’ moments than you get on the east coast.
What we’d check before booking: Large grounds can mean a longer walk from room to beach. Confirm your exact room block, pool-access arrangements, children’s facilities and what ‘all-inclusive’ really covers.
Good for: Pool-loving children; families wanting sand and entertainment
Indicative room rate: US$220–450/night (2-adult base-room guide, not a family quote)
Essque Zalu Zanzibar
Nungwi · northern tip
Sometimes the real luxury with children is not sharing one bedroom. Essque Zalu’s spacious suite and villa categories are worth exploring if bedtime comes earlier for the youngest traveller, and the resort also offers children’s activities.
What we’d check before booking: Important: don’t confuse ‘in Nungwi’ with ‘walk directly onto Nungwi’s easiest swimming sand’. This property has a rocky/cliff-edge setting; ask about steps, beach access and suitable sea swimming before choosing it.
Good for: Families who value room space and resort facilities over direct sand access
Indicative room rate: US$275–650/night (2-adult base-room guide, not a family quote)
Sandies Baobab Beach Zanzibar
Nungwi · north coast
You don’t need five-star everything for a brilliant family holiday. This is one to price-check if the kids mainly want beach time, a pool and a relaxed place for dinner. It can be a more approachable north-coast option than Zanzibar’s luxury villas.
What we’d check before booking: Read the current family occupancy rules carefully. A standard double might look cheap until the system requires two rooms or an upgraded category. Also check entertainment levels if your children are light sleepers.
Good for: Budget-conscious beach holidays; families planning to spend most days outside
Indicative room rate: US$160–330/night (2-adult base-room guide, not a family quote)
Bluebay Beach Resort & Spa
Kiwengwa · north-east coast
Bluebay makes sense for families who love spacious gardens, a resort pool and the wide white-sand look of the east coast. If your kids enjoy exploring shallow tidal flats with reef shoes, low tide can be part of the fun rather than a disappointment.
What we’d check before booking: The sea can retreat a long way at low tide, so don’t promise the kids an ocean swim at any hour. Ask for the tide advice and whether family-size accommodation is near the main amenities.
Good for: Families after a quieter resort feel and a potentially better price
Indicative room rate: US$180–360/night (2-adult base-room guide, not a family quote)
TUI BLUE Bahari Zanzibar
Kiwengwa / Pwani Mchangani · north-east
Think of this as a proper resort holiday: pools, restaurants and organised activities, instead of having to invent every day from scratch. It is particularly handy if adults want downtime and children want structure.
What we’d check before booking: Children’s clubs and activity schedules vary by age, season and operator, so check before promising a specific programme. The eastern beach is tidal; pool days will happen.
Good for: Families who like scheduled activities and multiple dining options
Indicative room rate: US$230–480/night (2-adult base-room guide, not a family quote)
Meliá Zanzibar
Kiwengwa area · north-east coast
A polished choice if parents want a genuinely comfortable resort as much as the children want pools and things to do. The larger family accommodation categories are appealing when everyone needs their own space.
What we’d check before booking: Here is the price trap: the ordinary room and the family room can be completely different budgets. A sampled family-room rate was around $900+ per night, versus roughly $400+ for a double. Check the real four-person total, not the teaser.
Good for: Families prioritising comfort, meals and larger family rooms
Indicative room rate: US$400–850/night (2-adult base-room guide, not a family quote)
The Residence Zanzibar
South-west coast · Kizimkazi area
If the children go to bed early and you’d love to sit outside without turning off the lights at 7pm, the villa setup is a real advantage. This quieter south-west base is about spreading out and slowing down, with family activities available on-site.
What we’d check before booking: A private pool looks dreamy, but for toddlers it demands constant adult supervision and thoughtful room selection. You are also a fair way from the north-coast beaches, so don’t book expecting daily Kendwa outings.
Good for: Families wanting privacy, spacious villas and a slower pace
Indicative room rate: US$460–900+/night (2-adult base-room guide, not a family quote)
Zuri Zanzibar
Kendwa · north-west coast
If you are going to splurge, pay for something useful: Kendwa’s comparatively tide-friendly beach, landscaped grounds and a calm feeling. This is beautiful for families who want beach time together more than constant resort entertainment.
What we’d check before booking: Very expensive once you need two bedrooms. Official 2026 rack rates show a bungalow from $790 in mid-season, while the two-bedroom garden villa starts around $2,500. Don’t present the bungalow rate as the price for a whole family.
Good for: Luxury family beach trips; excellent sand; bigger budgets
Indicative room rate: US$790–1,340+/night (2-adult base-room guide, not a family quote)
Sea Cliff Resort & Spa
Mangapwani · west coast, near Stone Town
One of the most interesting choices if your family would rather have things to do than just another beach lounger. There are big infinity pools, a children’s pool, a kids’ club, games and sports. It is also handier for Stone Town than the north coast.
What we’d check before booking: The setting is on a cliff, not a classic long, gently sloping sand beach. Choose it for resort activities, views and exploring, not because you want toddlers paddling on Kendwa-style sand all day.
Good for: Active families; older children; Stone Town excursions
Indicative room rate: US$210–440/night (2-adult base-room guide, not a family quote)
Seven things we’d sort out before booking a Zanzibar family holiday
- Put in each child’s exact age. “Family friendly” doesn’t automatically mean four people fit in one room. Ask about connecting rooms and the full sleeping setup.
- Ask if the kids’ club actually accepts your child. Some are aimed at school-age kids, and supervision, opening hours and charges can change.
- Choose the beach for your swimming habits. If spontaneous dips matter, shortlist north-coast sand before you fall for east-coast photos.
- Price the meal plan properly. All-inclusive can be excellent with snack-hungry children, but compare it to half-board if you want to eat outside the resort.
- Pre-arrange the transfer. Most beach resorts are a substantial drive from the airport. For young children, ask about suitable car seats, air-conditioning and a realistic pickup plan.
- Pack reef shoes, sun protection and medicines you use regularly. Ask a travel-health professional about the latest Zanzibar malaria and mosquito-bite guidance for your children’s ages.
- Budget beyond the room. Zanzibar’s visitor insurance rules and hotel-related levies may apply. Confirm current requirements, inclusions and any family supplements before leaving.
One itinerary that usually works: six or seven nights in one resort, one half-day Stone Town outing if the kids are up for it, one boat or nature activity appropriate to their ages, and plenty of completely unplanned pool time.

Family holiday questions, answered
Which Zanzibar beach is easiest with toddlers?
Start with Kendwa or suitable sections of Nungwi if frequent sea swims matter. Tides affect these north-coast beaches less than Kiwengwa or Paje, but waves and currents still change: children always need close supervision.
Is all-inclusive worth it for a family?
Often, yes—especially with children who snack constantly. Compare the total for your exact children’s ages, though; drinks, specialty restaurants and kids’ activities may not all be included.
Can four people share one hotel room?
Never assume so. Zanzibar hotels have very different child-age cut-offs, rollaway bed policies and occupancy limits. Put both children’s ages into the booking search and confirm sleeping arrangements with the hotel.
Why can the sea disappear on Zanzibar’s east coast?
Low tide exposes broad shallow sand flats on parts of the east coast. It can be fascinating for nature walks, but it may interrupt the swimming you imagined. Pack reef shoes and check tide times.
What extra costs should we allow for?
Budget for hotel transfers, any non-included meals, the current Zanzibar visitor insurance requirement, applicable local hotel taxes and child-related supplements. Read the final booking total before paying.
How many nights are good for Zanzibar with children?
For most families, six or seven nights in one beachfront hotel is easier than moving every few days. Add a Stone Town night only if travel times and the youngest child’s routine make it worthwhile.

At a glance: which resort suits your family?
These are rough planning bands in US dollars, per night for an entry-level room for two adults, based on published sample rates and market positioning. They are not live quotes for 2 adults + 2 children; family rooms, school holidays, meal plans and taxes can change the total dramatically.
